CHAPTER 7

I rushed from my bedroom and ran straight into my father, who was coming up the stairs. “Toni, did you just hear a strange humming noi—” His eyes swept down my body, then back up to my tearstained cheeks. “Toni, are you feeling all right? You look like you’ve been crying.”

“I’m fine, Daddy,” I said. “But from now on it’s Antonia.”

“I see,” my father said skeptically. “Well, you have a visitor, Antonia.” He winked. “And it’s a guy.”

“Daddy!” I said.

The “guy” turned out to be the cute-but-dim Officer Dwayne Whaley. He was waiting for me in the kitchen, holding a cup of coffee.

“Officer Whaley needs to take you down to the police station to fill out some forms,” my dad explained.

“Yeah, I just have to, uh, take you to the station,” Dwayne repeated, “and, uh, fill out some forms.”

Genius.

“Sure, that sounds fine,” I said. But I remembered what my mother had said. I had a job to do—and that took priority over anything else. “Just let me go upstairs and change out of my nice new shirt.”

“I wasn’t sure why you were wearing it in the first place,” my father said, giving me a curious look.

“Well,” I said, giggling, “I just wanted to look my best for you menfolk.”

It’s amazing what you can get guys to believe if you compliment them and giggle.

“Go upstairs and change, then,” my dad said. “We’ll be right where you left us.”

“I’ll be right back,” I replied.

As I headed up the stairs I could hear my father say, “That one’s going to send a real shock through the community when she gets older.”

I smiled to myself. You have no idea, I thought.
